Arugula Wars

Occasionally mentioned in the primitive oratory traditions of the War Men's society, these wars remain something of a mystery. In contemporary War-Tongue there is no word analogous to Arugula, leading some scholars to surmise that it is a contraction of "Take/Yes" or "Agul/Rhag" in War-Tongue. These scholars use this as a basis for the supposition that some great betrayal sparked the war. Still others suppose that the dwindling reserves of the War Men's Spice Mines caused the eventual collapse of their civilised society and that the Arugula Wars mark the turning point into war-scarred oblivion.

A further and far more controversial theory is that the word is simply a cry of surprise ("ARUGULAURLAGUALRUAGHAGLHARGH"*) at having bumped into something stiff and pointy in the relative darkness of their original subterranean dwellings, and that the "wars" may simply be childhood games which gain a risqué undertone as the children progress into adulthood.

* This in itself provides for a far more "raised eyebrows" approach to War-Tongue phrases such as "Do not give me his axe, give me your axe!"
