Battlebards

An elite fighting unit on the side of The Twelve Realms during the Vampyric Wars.

After discovering the Torvold's weakness for song-based attack, many Kelembadian husband and wife pairs of musician/warrior were forged into the Battlebards and spread amongst the other forces of the twelve realms in order to deal with Torvolds on the battlefield.

The husband was in charge of making the sound as loud and penetrating as possible, in order to have the song affect as many Torvolds to the greatest degree. Many used drums, or wind-instruments, while the most respected and feared husband battlebards relied only upon the power of their voice.

The wife took responsibility for her husband's life in her hands. As he was focussing entirely upon making the most effective music possible, it would be commonplace for a husband to wander into the frey of battle, lost in their own creativity. Cleaving apart any foes who would do their mate harm was the task of this battlemaiden, and it was made especially trying due to the fact that their partners were likely the focus of enemy assaults. Some of these brave women, sometimes referred to as "battlewives," would sing along with their husbands in harmony, increasing the effectiveness of their mate's songs. Others would sing a note juxtaposed to their husband's inorder to create as much dissonance as possible. It is under debate which, harmony or dissonance, is a more effective enhancement of the battlebard's musical weapon.

The most famous of these husband-and-wife battlebard teams consisted of the renowned swordswoman and war heroine T'nihl and her husband. The husband's name is not mentioned anywhere - in fact, all that is known is that he was of considerably lower rank than his wife, being only a corporal in the Kelembadian army. As a result, tales of their feats in battle generally refer to them as The Corporal and T'nihl.
