The Brotherhood of the King

Born of the tumult following the death of Hygrad the Mighty the Brotherhood of the King was a group of brave and noble adventurers who ventured forth into wild and untameable lands in order to tame them and protect the prophecy of the coming of the Magic Sword King. The organization's secret mark of the order was the symbol that would one day come to be known as the Sign of Ronard, which was tatooed on the arms of the members of the order.

The Prophecy of Hygrad

And there shall riseth in the Eastern temple a man born not of woman but of Earth. And he shalt hold the Fire of power in his Heart. Never shall his shield be rent sunder neither shall his Sword of Illusoration be perceived. He shall command the might of Air yet know it not, and in his Water shall he cleanse all but the most unclean. He shall come and with his coming comes the power to foldeth the world and to coagulate the very essence of the soul. He shall come and all shall quake save for the unquakable or the infirm, for he will free them from their bonds and return them to the heights.

The Brotherhood War

Among the Brotherhood there was clan warfare. Hardforge the Kingsguard believed the coming of the Magic Sword King to be the first chance at peace since the pre-time when all was idyll. Vilefang Darkmantle however saw the Magic Sword King as a force to be feared and reviled. He soon split the Brotherhood and took seventy of the best Knights of the Flame to his Dark Citadel of the Vile where he warped their Flameknight Training to turn them to Penumbral Shadow Hands, the most feared and vicious force in the pre-Elemenstation continuum. The Penumbral Shadow Hands and Vilefang Darkmantle formed the core of the rapidly growing Otherhood of the Tyrant a dark mirror of the Brotherhood of the King whose stated mission was to destroy the prophecy and to establish Vilefang Darkmantle as the Shadow Tyrant. They failed.

The Brotherhood of the King fought for generations, protecting and promoting the prophecy. All while they fought back the dark villainy of the Otherhood, often working in tandem with The Cleansers of the Taint, started by a companion of Hardforge the Kingsguard. These exploits are alluded to in many sources, but have not been laid out in a narrative form... yet. (See below)

Leaders of the Brotherhood throughout its holy quest include:

and many many more.

Not to be confused with

The Brotherhood of the King set up by decor bob King Brian the Fab of Alfafanar. They performed strange rites, where women were not welcome.

The less said about this brotherhood, the better.

Source Material

Events of formation of the Brotherhood and the first saga of the Brotherhood War are told in Covenant of the Hardforge, one of the many ElemenstorLance novels. The remainder of the novel deals with the events of the Brotherhood War. However, the deeds of the Brotherhood of the King are said at the end of the book to have been much greater even than the defeat of the Penumbral Shadow Hands.

Many fans have cried out for further tales to be told in a spin-off novel series, and indeed this may be the case, with ghost-writer Anders K Fitch supposedly preparing the first of the Brotherhood Octology (ELotH:BO) for publication sometime in 2007. It is known that it was one of the Brotherhood's members who slew the Tyrant of Otherhood and thus de-activated the Vile Automata.
