Day of Choice

Celebrated throughout Battal, the Day of Choice is a pleasant assault upon the senses of sight, hearing, and taste. It is a chance for the culinary experts of Battal to display the highest reaches of their skill, for only the best of foods are welcome at this feast. There is always music, although the type of music varies depending on the race celebrating it.

The tradition originally began with the Nevelost during their wandering years. Once a year many of the wayward beings would gather together, largely in the city of Merrigold, to share the edible delights they had come across upon their wanderings. After the First Great Tragedy of the Nevelost, the feast gained a more nostalgic mood. Sometimes Nevelost would travel to the surface to gather foods they could not find in the Underkingdom of Grth'lwythlnn and bring them back to share with their friends and family. When the Second Great Tragedy of the Nevelost struck, the race ceased to follow the tradition any longer.

Fortunately it had been passed on to the Elves, with whom the Nevelost had intermarried a great deal before the Second Great Tragedy, and from them it spread to other races. Men were the most vigorous in their celebrations, with streamers and marching music and feast tables that made most other descendants of Furniture envious. The Hatstands of the Totem, however, merely looked upon the practice with the disappointment of an elder who is loath to jolt the youth from their wasteful yet ephemeral joy. Many local traditions also sprung up around the ceremony, differing widely from village to hamlet, thorp to city.

Probably the most well known local variant of the Day of Choice is related to The Wizbits. We learn that Penny was in the village of E'Lylin's ceremonial marching band , where her duty was to provide music for the ritual annointing of the Rubian of Water that would, quite unexpectedly, enter her life and bestow a great destiny upon her.
