Der Elemenstorer

Der Elemenstorer were without question the best Black Metal band ever to exist outside of Norway's tightly-knit "inner circle." Initially formed in New Canaan, Connecticut in 1997 by vocalist Hans "Kuluk'shokourung'tagag'onk" Straffer, guitarist/swordtarist Clancy "Petago Kerrik" Halliday, bassist Erich Aschenbrum and drummer Bob, the quartet enjoyed surprising success given that the Black Metal scene had supposedly died that very year. Sadly, after recording only one song for their first album, "ELAMENTATIONS," Clancy Halliday was struck by a car while standing in the middle of the road at night with his eyes closed and fingers in his ears. Although he survived, he was unable to remember how to play guitar. He was replaced by Trent Halliday (no relation), who remained with the band until Straffer's self-immolation on February 13, 2004.

The band has reformed as of January 7, 2006 with Erich, Bob, Clancy (who has learned to play keyboards), and new member Var Dolzelberg (real name unknown, an obvious play on Var Dolzeberg), but has not released a new album as of this writing.

Style & Lyrics

Although accurately classified as Black Metal, Der Elemenstor's music verged on the neoclassical at times, apparently due mostly to the influence of Bob who is a graduate of Julliard.

The band's lyrics, almost all attributed to Straffer, focused on the darker aspects of ELotH:TES, although they were not always strictly canonical. For example:

Flume of Light/On which I ride/Back to my home/Back where I came from

Going to find/That darkest bride/And die forever in her thousand arms

("Kalechio", from Der Elemenstorer)

For that matter, they may not always have been in English. No one could understand Straffer's shrieking vocals, and he often gave conflicting versions when asked what words were. Certainly, none of the other band members ever knew.

The band also did versions of songs like A High Elemenstor's Elemenstave Has An Eldritch And Even Sometimes Epic Knob On The End and Her Eyes, My Soul's Unlight live, but sadly never officially recorded them.

Does anyone still have that original demo tape? Mine got stolen (along with my car) after I was pummeled unconcious in the mosh pit at a show in '01. I didn't even care about the car, but that tape was practically mint!
