Epic Fantasy Warrior Quest VI: Lost Rubians of the Forgotten Unknowns

 

The sixth game in the award-winning Epic Fantasy Warrior Quest videogame franchise, and until recently, the only one never to be released outside of Japan. It was the first game in the series to feature the Professions system in its entirety and was the largest game ever produced for the NES.

 

A remake was produced nearly a decade later for release in the US for the Nokia N-Gage. However, it was only released long after everyone on the face of the planet had long stopped caring about the N-Gage.

 

The plot involves four orphans who each happen to swallow a shard of rubian scattered when Headless Horace (introduced in EFWQ V: Keys to the Hearts of the Sky Orbs) tried to absorb all of the world's rubians but exploded from the immense power. Now a head in a jar, he races to collect the rubians again, to rebuild his body and conquer Battal.

 

Story

Eons ago, there was a minature civilization existing inside of a flower bud. The civilization was known as Pollenia. Inside of the flower were the Crystal Rubians which maintained order in the world. However, the Crystal Rubians were abused by Dark Forces and destroyed the tiny world, sending Rubian shards everywhere.

 

Elsewhere, a mad general called "Horace the Merciless" is gathering rubian shards to grant himself the Knack, but an accident ends up giving tiny shards to four young orphans from a tiny podunk village on The Sickle (the village is actually called Podunk).

 

It is notable that the actual plot as presented in-game makes very little sense, in part due to a lously translation job. This is because the game was written in Japanese, then translated into Latin to make it truly feel like a medieval adventure, then translated back into Japanese, and finally translated to English.

 

Often, the reasons for accomplishing tasks are non-sensical gibberish, like "DRAGONS CONSUME KNIGHT BOY WANDER PERSON LOCALE MOUNTAIN HIGH."

 

 

Gameplay

The battle system was refined so that if all the characters selected one enemy, but he died due to poisoning, the party members would not stab each other to death. Although some considered this a glitch in earlier games, it was touted as an "extra challenge" by the developers. Luckily, its existance ended with V.

Trivia

EFWQ VI introduced the Calculator Profession, creating a new type of spell casting known as Mathemagics. It was also the first game to feature Peeps as steeds, making them one of the staple mascots of the series.

 

Also, adding to the nonsensical nature of the dialog and quest descriptions, all text in the game was procedurally generated based on a much lauded AI system known as GREPQ. Since the plot was linear and fixed, it is unclear why the verbage of these text blocks needed to be dynamically generated, but most hard-core fans felt that it added "an incredible layer of depth and replayability".
