Elmether (or, The Elmether)

The Elmether is a mysterious concept. It alternately seems to refer to the entirety of the universe or the fabric of space-time-elements. The universe is made up of "particles of Elmether", but it is also referred to as "the Elmether as a whole", and sometimes "the whole ball of Elmether".

It is known that the Elmether is divided into "planes". On the Highest Plane dwell the Hierarchs. There are many other planes, among them the NastyPlanes, Nastier Planes, and NastiestPlanes, which are inhabited by Dyemons and other malevolent creatures, and the Summit of the Skies, birthplace of Gespeshio. The world of the Shield and Sickle (and Cataclysmic Bluont) is presumably another plane of the Elmether...or perhaps it is the only realm not part of it?

Controversially, believers in the octahedric hyperprism hypothesis suggest that the true nature of Elmether is actually The Unspeakable. In that approach, the catastophic effects associated with The Unspeakable stem from the damage that such elemenstation does to the Elmether itself.

Battal is one of the few planes inhabited by life as we know it. The other planes of the Elmether are inhabited by far stranger beings, including the non-corporeal Elementals and Dark Spirits. The Elementals and Dark Spirits describe their planes of the Elmether as "dull as watching paint dry", so take whatever opportunity they can to meddle in the physical planes.
