The Falchion Faction
Never has a group so repeatedly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory as the well-meaning but grossly incompetent band known as the Falchion Faction. Ironically, epic failure after shamefully epic failure ended in the faction's ultimate victory. Their emblem is a sword (presumably The Forgotten Falchion) being wielded by a Golden Crested Backaw. The only reason the Faction is canonical is because of the ElemenstorLance book, The Forgotten Faction--no one in Battal can recall their existence.
The Falchion Faction was formed by Lady B'gt'ts and Welregar of Ebonshire to combat Lord Quintak Hoch, an increasingly obsessive item collector and head of the Item Law Makers Guild. They knew that, because Quintak had pissed off just about everyone in Battal, all they needed was a symbol around which to rally an effective resistance and Quintak would shortly be defeated. Unfortunately, the symbol they chose was The Forgotten Falchion, one of the items Quintak had attempted to appropriate. For some reason, while recruitment drives were always very exciting and successful, the vast majority of new recruits forgot to show up for training; indeed, forgot about the faction altogether.
Mostly by accident, several heroes did eventually find their way into the ranks of the faction. Korbrin Terribluth, the untrustworthy and evil Dark Elemenstor, Baffien the Whizzard, the young pacifistic assassin Lyssa Circumstances from the future, overlooked Stream Elemenstor Benedeir the Mediocre, amorous polysexual bandit Thad Obor, and the entire Dugba Scissor Tribe--who don't really cotton to the idea of their scissors being taken from them--eventually joined, though at least half of these stayed because they kept forgetting to leave.
Things seemed to be looking up when Giant item craftsman Dommelham Gentral joined the group and was elected mayor of New Capitol City. With access to the legendary secret-keeping, deal-making, and cigar-smoking powers of the back room of decision making, victory against the Item Law Makers Guild was effectively assured. But Lady B'gt'ts forgot that there are two Life gears called "Wings of a CENRA," and so when she manifested to some townsfolk looking a bit like a Buxom Succubi of Darkrend Mountain, the group was run out of town.
Later still, there was much sneaking into parties. For a time the Faction forgets what it's even supposed to be doing, so the parties become a semi-regular thing.
But Quintak eventually hunts them down and reminds them. In the climactic final battle against Quintak, Welregar falters. Before the finishing blow can be struck, all of the Elemenstors traveling with the group amplify the powers of the Forgotten Falchion, erasing the memory of Hoch and rendering him harmless. Also unfortunately erasing the last several months of everyone around, making everyone confused as to what they were doing. The Falchion Faction disbands, feeling triumphant for reasons they can't quite explain.
The overcharged Falchion also destroys the Item Law Makers Guild, as the heroes lost several months of memory but every member of the Guild had their mind completely wiped. The guild was unable re-form until 20,034, though roving bands of disorganized Item Death Squads were known to appear from time to time.
