Hazard's Guess

Hazard's Guess is a criminal gang of wild Hatstands of the Totem, which plays a minor story role briefly toward the beginning of Book 8. They appear to be based in or around Yalka.

They number, at the time of the events depicted in Book 8, four hatstands, each of which is an accomplished singer of epic tales. All are Free Furniliars in one way or another.

Popular wisdom holds they derive their name from the affliction of their leader, Hazard Shibboleth, with dysnumeria. This is never explicitly stated in canon, however.

Their criminal expertise lies in kidnapping and apparently also petty theft.
