Lavatoria

The ancient land of Lavatoria consisted of the western regions of what would later be called Battal. Formed of the Vale of Airth after the Darkstorm, Lavatoria was a vast and barren wasteland of dire swamps, inhospitible mountains, and foggy scorched lowlands. It was into this region that in approximately year -32,400 (TH) that a noble race of Taintless Men was born, one of the first of the races of Men to domesticate wild furniture. This was a race that raised the chore of cleaning to a religious, cultural, and moral expression of their world view. The craftsmen of the Taintless Men developed the art of brewing Ornamental Dishwashing Liquid, a substance famed for its puissant ability to clean the scum and taint of evil from even the most soiled of crockery and table-wares.

The Dishwashing Liquid Distilleries of Lavatoria produced tremendous amounts of the stuff, storing it in giant underground storage facilities for later use. It was these underground tanks that were discovered much later in the histories of Battal, when the story of Lavatoria had been long forgotten by the races of Men. This led to the belief that Ornamental Dishwashing Liquid was a non-renewable natural resource of the region, not realizing that it was at one time made by laboring craftsmen.

Taming the wildernesses of Lavatoria, the Taintless Men established a paradise whose fame spread far and wide throughout the lands. But dark clouds were forming on the horizon of this fabled kingdom. The Hierarchs, jealous of the success of this johnny-come-lately race sought to sew the seeds of evil and dispair, and failing that, to outright destroy the kingdom.

The ElemenstorLance Novel, War of the Taints explain how this region at the time of the Million Year War was again a dark, boggy, unclean place (and largely it has remained so throughout Battal's embattled history) and why no trace of the Taintless Men remained.
