Lawmaker Cycle Wars

The harsh rules of the Lawmakers over Enchant'red Items and Item Laws demanded strict internal procedures as well. The bureaucracy of the Lawmakers, though not nearly as convoluted as their successors (The Item Law Makers Guild), was at least as harsh as unforgiving. This was also present in the succession of the Highman Lawmaker, the highest authority of their order. Succession was dictated by long and arduous processes, which came to be known as Cycle Wars.

No two cycle wars are alike, as their rules are dictated primarily by whoever happens to be Highman at the time. The Lawmakers, a very conservative bunch, showed great respect to their Highman and wouldn't just do away with theirs at a moment's notice. Thus, the Highman's response to challenge would set the tone for the brewing Cycle War, which might go on for days, or even months.

As an example of how different each cycle war, it is useful to compare the second and third. In the Second Cycle War of Legal Analysis, Highman Lawmaker Polinor the Unkind and Unexpected decided to settle the matter through a battle of wits. The challenger, known as Chambermouse, astonished all his peers by besting Polinor with his knowledge of the item laws by proving that a hat that Polinor had rejected and condemned to destruction was actually made, enchanted, and named in accordance with the Item Laws. It was thus early on that he was given the title of Chambermouse the Forgiving, for his careful analysis and presumption of innocence for item makers and enchanters.

The Third Cycle War of Funny Name-Calling however, was quite a different affair (and contrary to its name, not very humorous at all). For this time, a Mud Farmer named Euldere the Bumpkin challenged Highman Chambermouse (quite unwittingly) by insulting the same hat that had started the Second Cycle War. Now, it's quite understandable that a Highman wouldn't be caught dead wearing a phallus for a hat... but the normally calm and forgiving Chambermouse lost his characteristic placidity and engaged the filthy peasant in a series of alcohol-fueled insult matches that ultimately ended with Euldere's execution after Chambermouse tricked him into naming the very same enchanted hat incorrectly.

The Lawmakers agreed that this was a bit over the top, so while the Third Cycle War did not result in a change in succession, Highman Chambermouse's title was altered to that of "The Crybaby" to accurately reflect the bloodthirsty hissyfits that characterized the conflict. Chambermouse seemed to take to the title immediately, as he greeted the news of his new moniker by bursting into tears and locking himself in his room.
