The Mardath Highlands

See Also: Mandleclang

The high grassy hills of Mandleclang, while breathtaking to behold, were thought by most of its folk to be far too cold, windy, and depressing for habitation... the sort of place where one would probably spend far too much time indoors drinking themselves into an alcoholic stupor. In other words: perfect for Dwarves.

The Mardath Highlands was a haven for ex-patriate Dwarves of the Beutrafficades and other Mountain Kingdoms seeking adventure, suffering exile, or who had quite possibly forgotten where there home was. Those Dwarf kingdoms can be difficult to find at times.

The only organized settlement of the Higlands was Dwarfsdown, wherin the Forge-Kings who made their seat of power in Mandleclang were known to emerge from the mines to hold court, as well as get stinking drunk.

The Highlands during the time of the Dwarven Wars feature prominently in Mudlake, the Forester:

The Highlands of Mardath lay before him, and stretching out across the hills he beheld many stone huts dotting the landscape amongst the rolling fields of barley, and fertile grasslands where grazed many a Backa and Nurbilak. Though these huts were small, Mudlake would later learn that under each of them existed labyrinthine networks of poorly-constructed mineshafts, where the Dwarves would spend the daylight hours mining for precious metals, followed by much drinking and sulking.

-- from the ElemenstorLance novel, Mudlake, the Forester

The Dwarven Wars were not the only wars which found their way to the Mardath Highlands. A portion of the Great War of Magiks and Things was fought there, when the army of Giants and Trolls led by Brothic Gandlebar was teleported there by the surviving telesorcelers of Nar, resuting in the Massacre of Mardath. It was, after all, a very great and magikal war.
