Midnight in the Garden of Lost Emotions (MitGoLE)

A book in the ElemenstorLance series, The Magic Sword Kings. The book was renamed as "Dream Steam" in the second printing and featured the Ice Princesses of Northarbor on the cover, despite the fact that they were not featured in the book.

The eponimous garden is also known as the Chrome Garden. It exists outside of time in the FaeriWraithe Lands, marking the second time the garden appears in canon (Book 2 being the first), but its earliest appearance in the continuity timeline. However, since the garden exists outside of time, Orphenna Troughberry makes a brief cameo. Given the refugee status of the Troughberry family as well as the crew from this book, one is left with the hints that only refugees can gain access to the garden.

The Plot

The book begins during the tail end of the Century of Fire, in an unnamed small northeastern settlement. In the middle of the night, at the height of a violent storm, a stranger appears at the door of astrolonomer Orwin Gernal. The stranger is taken in, badly shaken and unsure of where or when he is. As the days pass, he is evasive and vague about his origins and he insinuates himself into village life. Before too much is revealed, the entire village is displaced by fierce raids of Khith-Cohoris-Wutel raiders. The stranger, who reveals himself to be Margon Darjeel, flees with Orwin Gernal and the two soon meet up with the Gigglewoman Ehrist Whiteheart, who joins the duo.

One thing leads to another and soon they are a loosely confederated group on a quest (SPOILER: it is ultimately futile) to rediscover the Seven Lost Emotions, a quest inspired by the research of Wolfram Walframovich, whose story is also retold in this book.

Three quarters of the way through the book, the protagonists pass into the FaeriWraithe Lands where they meet Bonard I and ultimately emerge in the distant past, just after the marriage of King Ronard to Caliodora. The book perfectly sets the stage for The Elfin Factions Tetragy, where Bonard I plays a larger role.
