Mindless Automoton

As the name might suggest, this is not a "real" contributor...

But rather is a perl script, sent here from ... somewhere... to automate pages

Currently he is responsible for these pages:

Basically, He is a perl script which downloads the backup.zip every half hour (with a few checks to make him skip it when no changes have been made to the wiki content.. he will run regardless every 6 hours just in case), and crawls through it and extracts all sorts of data about all the pages in the wiki. Then, he looks for pages which contain the magic comment:

The script will execute the perl in the top section, and place any output that is generated into the bottom section.

For your convenience, there are several data structures pre-gathered for you, and several utility functions available to use. (I'll assume you know perl)

All of the information gathered by the Automoton is stored in a big old hash table filled with hash tables and stuff called %pages.

The keys of the %pages hash are the titles of the pages. A value in the hash table is another hash table full of data about that page. They are (in no particular order):

exists : a boolean for wether the page exists or not. If it does not exist, it is a broken link.
content : The actual content of the page.. all the text.
headers : A hash table of the headers of the page. The headers tell you who edited the page last (name), when they edited it (time), etc etc..
links : a hash table of all the links from the page. The keys are the links, the values are the count of the number of links to that page from this page.
nlinks : the number of links from this page.
nulinks : the number of pages linked to from this page.
backlinks : A hash of the pages that link TO this page (it's links in reverse, with an identical structure).
nrefs : The number of links TO this page.
nurefs : The number of pages which link to this page.
title_guess : A guess of the title of this page. Basically it looks in the first 5 lines of the content, and looks for a line that begins with a ! with something that might be a title after it. If it didnt find one in the first 5 lines, it is simply the null string "".
isindex : a boolean indicating if this page is listed on the IndexPages or not.
isgen : a boolean which says wether or not the page contains any generated content or not.
skip : Wether or not this page has been skipped (because it was excluded by the ExcludedPages page.
backto : Any links that the bot thinks are "Back to X" links.
forwardto : Any pages which refer to this page by a "Back to X" link.
backtos : The number of "Back to X" links on this page.
forwardtos : The number of pages which link to this page by a "Back to X" links.
spellscore : The number of letters that would need to change to turn this page's name into the most-similar existing page (only defined for broken pages).
spellings : The pages which have a similar spelling to this one (only defined for broken pages).
flags : A hash of flags which ere set using the Perl-Tags. Keep reading.

Every time it finds a comment in the source that looks like this:

Its information will be entered into the flags hash for that page (Or for the other page) in the second version.

In this example, 'swanky' and 'special' will be set to 1 (true)

'my_rating' will be set to 6, and 'fred_says' will be set to "Howdy"

You can then use this in scripts.

There are also a few functions you can use in your perl code:

gen_page is the most used. It generates a "page" of links, it takes a number of named parameters:
- source : A arrayREF of where to get the list of potential pages. If omited, it will use all pages where skip is false.
- criteria : a codeREF of a sub to filter of which pages to display (it will show all pages where the sub returns true). If it is omitted, it will display every page where links or sublinks contains at least one item.
- order : a codeREF to a sub which returns a comparrison of two pages for sorting. The sub should work like <=> or cmp. If omited, it will be in alphabetical order.
- links : a codeREF of a sub which returns a arrayREF of the pages to list after each page. The function is called with one argument (the page being listed). The sub should return an arrayREF of the links to display for that page.
- sublinks : Just like links, except they are displayed UNDER, not after.
- section : a codeREF to a sub used to identify which "section" a page belongs to. This is for diaplaying the jump-table at the top. It is called with one argument, which is the page's name, and the sub should return the name of the section. If you want alphabetical sections, use \\&alpha_sections (thats what it is for). You SHOULD make sure that the sections will be together when sorted by the 'order' above. When omited, it won't generate a jump table.
- region : a string which defines which region of a page you are in.. this is for the jumptables on pages where you have more than one gen_page. This is so it can differentiate the two "A" sections. If you only have one gen_page jump table on your page, just omit this.
- name : a codeREF to a sub defining how the listed pages will look. It is called with two arguments. The first is the name of the page. Use this to index hashes and such.. The second is the name of the page suitable for printing into the wiki.. (any internal camelcase words have been prefixed with a ~) Use this for printing the page's name or a link to it. If omited, it will print just a link to the page.
- section_name : a codeREF to a sub defining how the sections are printed. Called with two arguments, both of which are the name of the section being printed, but one has been processed like the second argument of 'name' above.
- link_name : like 'name' but for the links. It has an extra 3rd parameter, which is the page that this link is being referenced by.
- sublink_name : just like 'link_name' but for the sublinks. It also has the extra 3rd parameter.
get_reachable_hash : for determining which pages are reachable from a particular page It takes two mandatory (posisitional) arguments, and two optional (named) arguments.
- first arg : The page to use as the "source" for the search.
- second arg : how far to search.
- ignore : a codeREF to a sub which returns 1 when a page should be completely ignored (wont show up in the list, and wont be expanded) The sub is passed 1 arg (the name of the page)
- noexpand : similar to 'ignore' Except that the page WILL be included in the list, but no links form it will be expanded.
alpha_sections : used for passing as an argument to gen_page (see 'section' above)
- It takes 2 strings and returns -1 0 or 1, just like cmp, except that it does some special processing to make sure that non-alphanumeric characters are lumped together.

It'd be cool if you could specify a target output page that it would edit and then replace the entire text of said page.

Is the Mindless Automoton down? It hasn't updated anything in 3 days or so.

Hard to say... I don't understand how it works, MA was all Tim's doing and I haven't seen him around lately. I know that sometimes updates to PBWiki break the bot. I'll look into it but I imagine we'll need to find Tim.

MA seems to be acting flaky right now because of some difficulties. Could be related to some strangeness with the backup download. Working with pbwiki to see if I can get it resolved
