Welcome to the epic world of Epic Legends of the Hierarchs!

This world began as a CCG that focused more on reinventing the rules of the CCG than on creating a new world. In this regard, the CCG was a moderate success, failing to capture a significant fanbase. The game has continued to be printed to this day, with continually diminishing returns. More than the gameplay, the cards themselves interested the few fans of the game, particularly the lore printed on the bottom of each card. The lore itself was very unspecific. Instead of listing great feats accomplished, it listed mundane things like Harbinger Portent's favorite food (cheese) and Char Reyarteb's hobbies (water polo, shuffleboard). But the fans were intrigued. Why would such a powerful Elemenstor enjoy cheese? Was Reyarteb any good at water polo? Soon, short stories began to be published in anthologies, detailing the beginnings of the world of Battal and its epic history, from the Magic Sword Kings to the Resundering. By the time the table-top RPG came out (set during The Savage Brutality Of The War Men), a well-developed world had come together. The fan base grew. Due to the huge profits from the sale of the ELotH Limited Edition Busts, a series of novellas were commissioned. Written by Tycho Brahe, these novellas would elevate the Epic Legends to epic levels of revenue.

Shortly after the first book was published, "The Wizbits" began its first-season run. Eventually, the series was cancelled and Brahe finished his Elemenstor Cycle, but the world of the Hierarchs is not dead. Many new authors have taken up the pen to try to add depth to the world that Brahe and others have barely begun to outline. With an MMO in its early stages of Alpha, one cannot help but think that ELotH has nowhere to go but UP.

This wiki was created to help bring together the massive amounts of ELotH lore found across its many disparate sources. This n00b section is intended to help those new to the world learn about its epic history and the characters that shaped it. Enjoy.

History

In the beginning, the planes were unshaped, and the Hierarchs ruled over all. Out of the infinite power and chaos that twisted through the Elmether, the Hierarchs forged the Starborn Gem and The Four Vales. The Four Vales were the earliest version of what we would even remotely recognize as the existence of a physical world and the Starborn Gem, or Oculus Omnipotens, was the repository of all possible knowledge in the world, including the knowledge of Elemenstation. Then the Darkstorm occurred and the vales were interwoven and conjoined, with the resulting mess being scattered across the newly forming time and space. The Hierarchs remained in their timeless existence among the Elmether in the higher planes of existence, while Battal was formed from some of the lower planes.

Some of the Hierarchs took pity on the barren and ruined world of Battal and set out to fill it with life. They did this, creating first furniture, then man to be the servants of the furniture. This relationship did not work out quite as they intended.

Early society was disorganized and fraught with war. After thousands of years, King Ronard found the powerful element called Rubian and from it forged the first rubian sword (see Ronard's Rather Small And Weak But Nevertheless Enchanted Sword). Although magic swords were quite common, Ronard thought that this new magic stone made him more special then anyone else with a magic sword. With the use of his tiny magic sword, along with the liberal application of his Very Large But Unenchanted Spikey Hammer, Ronard united the Twelve Realms. (It is disputed whether Ronard himself discovered Rubian, or whether this is in fact revisionist history caused by the business end of a very large and spikey, though unenchanted, hammer.)

Control of Battal passed to Ronard's son, Ronard the Shorter. He proved unready for the responsibility and the kingdom collapsed into lawlessness after being torn apart by the Vampyric Wars. This period of lawlessness was known as the Wandering Age.

When order was regained, the descendants of Ronard ruled Battal for many years, each in turn carrying the magic sword that named him the "Magic Sword King". This continued for 9,500 years, until The Longest Moment during which Fonard, heir of Ronard, lost Ronard's Very Large But Unenchanted Spikey Hammer, The Magic Sword Kingdom crumbled and the Spica Wars began. Eventually Zonard, last of King Ronard's line, met Yar the Sorcerial in battle. The epic struggle consumed both of them, and the arcane energies it created split the world of Battal into three epic lands, The Shield, The Sickle, and the ever-so-epic Cataclysmic Bluont. This was The Sundering. The period directly following the Sundering--that is, The Sundered Era--is described in the Tides of Epic Conflict Saga.

5,000 years after the Sundering, a Harbinger named Portent discovered the Starborn Gem, cast onto the Cataclysmic Bluont in the form of a comet. The Gem granted him knowledge of Elemenstation, and Portent set out to unite the world once more. To aid him in his great labor, he took on a student, the young and ambitious Char Reyarteb. Over time, he took on many more students, and the knowledge of Elemenstation spread. Through his efforts, Portent was able to reunite the sundered world, but in the midst of the Unsundering, he was struck down by Char Reyarteb, who revealed himself as a traitor. This left the world still partially sundered, and the Cataclysmic Bluont did not join with the Shield and Sickle. The Willestrians of the Bluont felt slighted.

What followed was the Century of Fire, when Reyarteb used the Starborn Gem to call forth the War Men, who ravaged the newly reformed world and placed Reyarteb on a dark throne. Reyarteb founded the dark science of Dark Elemenstation, a perversion of High Elemenstation, and used its power to cement his rule.

During the rule of Reyarteb, Lord Kinlo came to power. He gained knowledge of the Four Underdogs through a Rogue Chronosorcellor, and set out to destroy them because he was crazy like that. Little did he realize that the Underdogs would not be born for a millennium, and so he only succeeded in nearly wiping out the Elemenstors. Kinlo died with his goals unfulfilled.

Even those who are relatively unfamiliar with the Epic Legends know about the Four Underdogs through the syndicated Saturday morning cartoon series, "The Wizbits." These 4 teens each discover a unique rubian gem, and through them gain knowledge of High Elemenstation. After many adventures, in particular a nasty encounter with the Dyemon-Ghost MooMaa, the Underdogs defeat Reyarteb at the Battle of the Rebuilt Kingdom and reestablish Elemenstation. In the lazy years that follow, some Elemenstors abandon their noble callings to become Wasted Elemenstors.

This brings us to the most epic part of the story, specifically the one told by Tycho Brahe in his bestselling Elemenstor Cycle of novellas. This cycle tells of the many struggles that arose from the reemergence of High Elemenstation in a world that was largely unprepared for it. The burgeoning art of Elemenstation attracted all the wrong types of people to this most arcane of arts: the lazy and ignorant, along with the corrupt and evil. Young Elemenstors struggled to find the true path towards High Elemenstation while resisting the temptations of Dark Elemenstation. Few indeed found the true way, for once the dark path of Dark Elemenstation was overcome, the even darker temptations of ale and wenches remained to tempt the chosen few. Eventually, the blossoming of magiks drew forth the shade of Char Reyarteb, who was not dead, merely resting his eyes. The resulting Hierarch Wars put all of Battal, indeed, all of space and time, at dire risk. Epic!

After this most epic of battles, peace reigned for 2,000 years until Archibald Almalastor began his study of Portent's bond of Unsundering. Working with the Willestrians, Almastor attempted to bring the Cataclysmic Bluont back into the fold of the Shield and Sickle. This mighty work, a work so mighty it could only have been completed by the mightiest of Elemenstors, would have completed The True Unsundering. In the middle of his Elemenstation, he was tragically attacked and killed by a band of renegade War Men, led by the mysterious Dark Master. The fate of the world hung in the balance, and only the timely intervention of the Willestrians could have saved the world from remaining forever Sundered. However, the Willestrians had a really important dinner to make, so they decided they'd rather not help out, leaving the field of battle in the hands of the War Men. The Shield and Sickle broke apart once again. This was The Resundering.

After this came the Unlight War, another time of great war which sees the resurgence of the Vampyres. Further works have connected the rarer and more worthless cards from the original CCG, these stories tell of the good Princess Crystalcrown and her betrayal at Mount Wor by Elanfariestel the Easily Convinced, and assembled a story near the end of known time. Some fanfics have attempted to take the story past the known timeline, but the picture they paint is incomplete at best.

Timesorc'ley

Another matter that does not fit directly into the timeline is the matter of timesorc'ley, Elemenstation that manipulates the very fabric of Timenes itself. It is known that High Elemenstation has some indirect effect on Timenes, but Chronosorcelry deals directly with it. The High Augur is the main authority on all of timenes because his staff lets him see all things at all times. Also to be reckoned with are the Chronoclave, formed to maintain the integrity of timenes. The Chronoclave exists outside of time in the Spaghetti Plane, from whence they can see all disruptions in timenes. The tales of the Chronoclave and its many exploits based out of their great hall on the western edge of the Spaghetti Plane, make up the series of ELotH fan fics called "Spaghetti Westerns."

Wiki

For those of you unfamiliar with wikis pay a visit to the SandBox. Try editing it, messing around with it or what have you, that's what it's there for.

That about wraps it up. Some of the above information is necessarily incomplete, although hopefully not blatantly incorrect. Digging through the primary sources isn't easy work - do you have any idea how long it takes to read every single damn playing card? At any rate, feel free to add as you see fit. Just make sure to not let this section get too verbose. After all, this is intended to familiarize new readers, not confuse them. If a point needs clarifying, do so. But if you want to add details, just link the appropriate page. Thanks!

I changed some of the text to make it all past tense and add a little epicness to it. Let me know if anything is out of line.

I made a few adjustments to account for the slight misuse of the terms Elemenstor, High Elemenstor and Grand Elemenstor
