Pen And Paper Sorcery Rules

By comparison to the complex rules for striking gears, the rules that cover the Sorcery magic system are simple indeed.

Each magic casting character has a spell level, which is calculated by taking half of the character's level + (base spell points amassed by the character / 100) rounded up to the closest whole number, but not to exceed two times the characters level.

A general rule of thumb is that until level 3 your spell level will be your character level, and after level 3 your spell level will be twice your character level.

Base Spell points (abreviated, strangely, SXP) are experience points awarded only to spell casters, and may be awarded for casting complex spells, researching arcane lore, or just effective role play (at the discretion of the game master).

Each spell has a cost and as spells are cast they consume Spell Points (SP), the pool of which starts at your SXP at each dawn. When SP are depleted, spells may be cast at the expense of Health Points instead.

Theoretically spell points only ever count upwards, but Epic Change: Reduced Spell Points can drastically reduce your spell points.

Spell Aquisition

Memorization

In order to cast spells, you must either have them memorized, in which case you can cast it as many times as you would like, but there is a limit to the number of memorized spells your mind can hold and you must use a memory erasing charm or book (most adventurers do not own their own of these items since they are very costly and must go to a guildmaster or sage) in order to remove a spell to replace it with another. Alternatively, if a spell is not cast or reviewed once every three game months it has a 3D7 (Better than 10) chance of muddling in your memory, at which point it disappears from your mind and another spell can be memorized in its place.

Scrolls

Scrolls contain quick use spells which magically help you to cast them, but are expended through use. Like memorization, there are no penalties associated with casting this spell and it consumes SP normally and is cast at normal rates.

Books

Ancient tomes of collected magic also exist. The enchanted nature of the books prevents their dissolution upon casting, but due to the nature of such runes, casting times for non-memorized book spells are doubled from memorized spells. Fortunately, SP is consumed at half of the usual rate. This makes magic tomes great indeed for the scholarly sorcerer, but less than ideal for adventuring sorcerers. Additionally, the spell book must not be moved during the casting.

Spell Tables

Level Typical Base Spell Points (SXP) Max Spells Memorized
1 5~20 (WIS+INT+2D5, but not less than 5) 2
2 10~80 3
3 100~150 3
4 300~600 5
5 400~750 6
6 500~900 7
7 600~1050 8
8 700~1200 9
9 800~1650 11

Notes

  • Generally it is agreed upon that being level 3 sucks.
  • Knack: Great Memory allows for an extra spell per level (along with other benefits).
