S'yrf'yl the Immortal

Hero of the Sw'ftfl'woots

"Why is everyone so surprised that I'm still alive?"

-- Book 9

Early Life

From a very young age, young S'yrf'yl yearned to become a hero, but was confined to his clan's raft on the Sw'ftfl'w River. He longed for adventure epic deeds of courage, but it seemed he would never break free from his family and his duty to every day throw his Sw'ftfl nets into the river to search for precious Gem Flecks and items.

One day, during a skirmish between the Ringlings and the Khith, an errant ring came into the hands of S'yrf'yl's clan. The ring was a very powerful ring, one of the Ringlings' finest. The disparity between the wealth of the clan before finding the ring and after finding the ring was so great that the clan leader was compelled to give an eligible young member of the clan up, as was the tradition at a Sw'ftfl'wootswap when a clan received treasure.

Freed of his loyalty to his clan, S'yrf'yl left to become an adventurer. Unfortunately, the ring, while valuable, was a much lighter treasure than the Sw'ftfl'woots were accustomed to handling, so the raft became dangerously underbalanced and sank, killing everyone aboard. This only served to further strengthen S'yrf'yl's resolve to right the wrongs of the world.

Immortality

S'yrf'yl quickly visited the Forests of Misery to find his true calling, but was gravely wounded by soulferic bats. He was saved by a group of Ringlings, the same group that was fighting that day his clan's raft sank.

The Ringlings felt a bit guilty since they sort of killed his entire clan, plus he was pretty buff, and they had been looking for someone to come to their aid in The War of the Item Guilds. The Ringlings granted him almost all of their power in the form of their most epic creation... the Ring of Immortality.

S'yrfy'l and the Ring of Immortality

S'yrf'yl became the Ringlings' champion, leading them through harsh times and fighting against those who would hurt them. Most Sw'ftfl'woots feel that S'yrf'yl has forsaken them, but a small sect, the S'yrf'ylians, see him as a model of what all Sw'ftfl'woots may someday become.

It should be noted that S'yrf'yl is not the only immortal in ELotH. In fact there's lots of them. However, he is the only being in Battal that may claim the title of "The Immortal" due to his possession of the Ring of Immortality.

His Adventures

This great Immortal of the river-folk would continue to play a role later in history. He would often be found lending a hand to those who were in times of trouble, or sometimes simply running errands for different kingdoms and peoples. As such, he was known throughout Battal as "a nice guy".

Assorted Deeds of S'yrf'yl

Many suspect that most of the adventures and various dire situations that S'yrf'yl found himself in were due to the prodding of the Ringlings, who wished to see just how well their Ring of Immortality was working, and also in the hopes of finding out what That One Ring was supposed to do.

The Warrior

As S'yrf'yl himself once said: "I'm in a lot of wars." Truer words were never spoken. Time and time again, the Ringlings would convince him to join one sort of alliance or another to face whatever great evil was threatening the peoples of Battal at the time.

"The Council beseeches you, Immortal One," said K'los, "to join the fight of the Army of Elves and Allies against the hordes of the Vampyre scourge."

"Look," said S'yrf'yl, "I'll tell you this again: I've been around for eons thanks to this ring, and lived to speak of many vicious battles brought to multicultural alliances by many a shadowy evildoer... Rhaja, Reyarteb, Yar, that one guy... and frankly... I'm sick of it. Heck... I remember the first time that Vhadxi tried to pull this off--"

"Do NOT underestimate the Dark Lord," shouted the Enchanted Elf King, his ears wagging as he pounded his fist on the table, "he has returned stronger and more evil than you could possibly imagine."

"Did he say Dark Lord?" asked one of the Ringlings lurking behind S'yrf'yl, who scampered up to whisper in his hero's ear, "Man, this is right up your alley, you should totally do it. They say an earthquake woke him up and everything."

"You just had to say it, didn't you," growled S'yrf'yl, staring down K'los. "Here it comes."

"We should bring That One Ring, too!" continued his exuberant follower, "Just in case!"

"I'll bet we've got a few priestesses who would love to meet the famous Immortal of the River," cooed Wylayer'rinnya, "Purple-skinned, white-haired, long ears and lots of cleavage..."

S'ryf'yl rose from his seat, surveying The Council with conflicted gazes. The Ringlings looked on, barely able to contain their excitement.

"Elves of Battal," said S'yrf'yl, proudly straightening, "You've got yourself an Immortal."

Wars at which S'yrf'yl participated:

(did not participate in the Great Elemenstation War, as it lasted only a day and S'yrf'yl was otherwise occupied)

Allies

Someone strange for someone who had fought in so many wars... but everybody pretty much seemed to like S'yrf'yl. It seems he managed this feat by never really picking a "side" in conflicts, but lending his blades to those in need. His allies include:

Enemies

However, during these wars there were particular races and characters whom S'yrf'yl would face time and time again.

Romance

S'yrf'yl is conspicuously a bachelor throughout the timeline of ELotH. This is probably due to the fact that he was immortal, and thus would live much longer than anyone he would have a long term relationship with (plus, he would stay young while they got all old and gross), and also that he was a perennial wanderer who never seemed to settle in one place for very long.

Still, the heart of S'yrf'yl was by no means made of stone, and occasionally he is found having a small affair here and there, or reminiscing wistfully about one of his flames. These include:

Fanta: Perhaps you need to settle down and find a nice, long-lived Elf Maiden! They're so pretty, too!

S'yrf'yl: Yeah... most of them don't dig on the blue fur.

-- ERD:Travelling Days

The Ending Times

Though the immortality of S'yrf'yl made him mighty of battle, strong of limb, long of life, et cetera... it had done nothing to prepare him for the return of the Seven Lost Emotions. After the year 39,942 he was to be found overcome with bliminity and frippiness. He locked himself away at an inn in Middleclang to drown his sorrows in libations while the Ringlings desparately tried to get him to take up his swords again.

Discussion

The picture is not fanart, but a sketch from one of the ELotH: TES - Pen and Paper RPG artists at a 'con (I've touched it up a bit). I can't remember his name because he got really angry when I asked him if he wanted to sign it... he started getting paranoid, yelling stuff like: "You have to tell me if you're a cop, man! It's the law, NARC!" ~ asura
That picture is awesome. -TychoCelchuuu
Glad you like it, the 'photoshopping' helps it quite a bit. I got a bunch from that guy, he was acting so wierd nobody wanted to talk to him. I'll scan them as I find them while cleaning out my office this winter. He did a few of S'yrf'yl, and I think there were some sketches of Vhadxi, Shezdor, and Lander if I remember correctly.

Tim Interewstingly, the discussion link at the top of the page doesn't work on pages with a "'" in them. Anyway... this article, and this character, are absolutely excellent. -Tim
TychoCelchuuu Yeah, he's one of my favorite thingies on this wiki. I especially like the Joinification'ing thingie part. -TychoCelchuuu

Tim Anybody know if this guy ever crossed paths with the immortal Armano?
asura Yeah, several times... and they hate each other. S'yrf'yl pursues him and slays many of the members of his cult during the Great War of Magiks and Things

asura Here's something that has me stumped: What was the first appearance of S'yrf'yl? Was it in the CCG, book, cartoon, or...?
Kenneth Pike He actually has a bit part in The Fires of Mount Windice. I don't think he's actually described as immortal until Dawn of the Dark Shadows, however. Now, I believe that the only material pre-dating Book 1 is the card game (which didn't get a S'yrf'yl card until later) and The Sundering of Vhaxdi, which doesn't mention S'yrf'yl and is kind of "semi-canon" anyhow. But if you come across an earlier reference, feel free to correct me.
Tim I think he was mentioned in the radio dramas, which would have been pretty early. It's hard to tell where he first showed up because once he became a major character then fans started finding him in any unnamed mysterious helpful Sw'ftfl'woot from earlier sources.
Kenneth Pike It's hard to say whether one can count Travelling Days since it doesn't actually name S'yrf'yl. Regardless, it looks like the summer of 1996 is about the time of inception for this character, and the name (and the immortality) are definitely straight from the word processor of Tycho Brahe. It's funny, this is actually one of the most ubiquitous characters in the entire license, practically from the very beginning, and he's not even an Elemenstor or something similar.
bfg00 He is also mentioned in Book 4 by Gavment Rayling when he is reminiscing about the Second Great Elemenstation War
