King Selent the Cedricellian

King Selent was the one hundredth King of Alfafanar. He took his name from Cedric the Bastard, the first King of Alfafanar and whom he modeled himself after.

There are conflicting versions of Selent's tale, but this much is certain: He commissioned the forging of the 100 swords, and was subsequently killed at the hands of deadly assassins.

Biographical Information (First Version)

In the year 16,550 King Selent was an ambitious and free spirited bachelor. Determined to see the world before he settled down he had built three giant sailing ships. He set sail with a fantastic array of ammenities and loyal servants, knights, and squires for what promised to be a very grand adventure.

Unfortunately, as soon as they had sailed beyond view of land, they were caught in a storm which came upon them suddenly. The ships were swept at the peaks of white capped waves to the far side of the world, the crew cowering below deck, the ships staying together merely because of long heavy cords which had been fastened between the ships so they did not loose each other in fog banks.

For days the storms beat against the ships and all crew were certain that this would be the end of them. Instead, the boats eventually were driven near land again and run aground. Fleeing from the boats onto land, the windswept weatherbeaten voyagers sought shelter in a cave.

The next morning, when the storm had finally abated, King Selent dispatched messangers to discover where they had wrecked. Soon the discovery was made that they weren't even on The Sickle, but on a completely unknown continent known as The Shield, and that they had landed on the coast of a kingdom called Parsonya.

Selent went about constructing a fort for himself from the remains of the ships, from which much usable lumber could be salvaged. Calling the fort New Alfafanar, he established a small kingdom for himself within its walls while he dispatched more messengers to bring news of this land. Soon he was in contact with the King of Parsonya who agreed to the fort as an embassy, foreign soil within the boundries of another country.

From here, Selent began making alliances with other notable figures from The Shield, ever searching for information as to how he might navigate back to his home land. One alliance was with the Forge-King of the Dwarves, Gragnakas. He wasn't anywhere near as smart or as cunning as King Cedric, but was a fairly decent poker player. And he could hold his drink. Well, he was at least better than Gragnakas.

The results of these handy talents were the 100 Swords of Sepathok, Selent's wedding cake and several other artifacts of earth-shattering power which looked good on the King's walls.

Discussion

There are actually two conflicting accounts of the history of King Selent. There is the view presented above, but here is the other: It was said that the wizard Mardrangion somehow was transported to The Sickle and taught King Selent the secret to navigating the oceans of Battal to reach The Shield, and that King Selent used his kingdom's exclusive access to this other land to financially dominate the other Sickle kingdoms. This is backed by the known fear that the Shushipodian people had of Selent.
