Supposedly, it is a closely (perhaps even jealously) guarded treasure of the Unseen Ones, and its theft by fell beings of great power (who are, apparently, in dire need of pleasure) is the proverbial pebble falling in the pond that sends Shanari off on her various and sundry well-oiled adventures.
