Strict Constructionists
Strict Constructionists are extremely literal-minded ELotH:TES fans who refuse to accept as canon anything that isn't in the absolute core source material of ELotH:TES. In practice that means they don't accept anything but the thirteen books of Brahe's basic Elemenstor Cycle, and even then they tend to dismiss, say, anything that they suspect to have been written by someone else.
In fact, no two Strict Constructionists agree on exactly what "the core material" consists of. Is it just the first three books? Just the first book? Maybe just Brahe's proposal and sample chapter? And what of the people that claim that Brahe was just a hack, and that the genius behind ELotH:TES was really James Langomedes -- they believe that The Wizbits is canon and that the Cycle is not.
This sort of extremism is what led to the Great ELotH:TES Fandom Council, held at RAE Con '97, at which many important decisions and compromises were reached. Unfortunately, nobody remembered to bring a pencil, so nothing got written down, and everybody walked away from the Council thinking their side had won.
They stand at one end of a spectrum with The All-Inclusionists on the other.
Discussion
| The most extreme example of this I've ever heard of was the idea that "A flash of lightning tore through the tumult, illuminating the grizzled Elemenstor and his ambulatory dresser" was the only canon line in all of ELotH:TES. -Tim |
