Summer of Item Law 69 (項目法律六十九の夏)

Super ElamenSTAR Episode 419

Aired 29th January, 2000

Summary

While looking for one of her students, Phila barges in to Wendel's room. Although he is dressed and preparing for the day, for some reason the enchanted sword they confiscated from Grimfleur in Episode 405 is on his nightstand.

"Is that what I think it is?" asks Phila, her temper rising.

"Er, well, that depends on what you think it is."

"What is it!?" she demands.

"Oh... it's just my, ah, Sword of Redoubled Dragonslaying. Er, plus four. Teen. I believe."

"I see." Amazingly, Phila departs without attacking Wendel.

"Dodged a gear there, didn't I?"

"Don't be so sure," says Blunder, tossing back a cold one.

Complications arise when the Grand Chief Itemstrator arrives at the Cerulean Citadel with a full honor guard made up of highly ranked Item Death Squad soldiers. In theory, they have come seeking recruits for the ranks of Name Finders among those who flunk out of the Citadel. But the Grand Chief Itemstrator confides in Phila that he has received an anonymous tip that someone within the Citadel has violated Item Law 69, among others. Phila merely smiles.

The Item Death Squad roughly questions a number of students before moving on to professors, and soon they arrive at Wendel's tower with information that he has an enchanted sword with an illegal name. He opens the door and violently kills as many members of the Item Death Squad as he can with his Fire Wand and a few full-blown Bassal gears.

As the next wave of Item Death Squad members approach, Phila appears asks again what the name of Wendel's "sword" is. He admits that he doesn't know its name, but he knows what it is used for--and it's not for slaying dragons.

Surveying the death and destruction around them, the Grand Chief Itemstrator watches Phila walk away, a look of satisfaction on her face. "I guess no one is breaking any Item Laws here after all," he says, bemused. "But try to be more careful in the future, not everyone can tell the difference between a true item law infraction and a simple case of mistaken item identity."

"Oh, she knew exactly what she was doing," says Wendel through gritted teeth.

"I... suppose we should leave now." says the Grand Chief Itemstrator.

"I think that would be best," replies Wendel as the scene fades.

Notes

Many fans have noted that the Item Law Makers Guild was destroyed in 18,103, and re-established the first 10 Item Laws and started the High Ultimate Item Law book of Item Laws in 20,034, a few hundred years after this episode. The original script for this episode actually refers to a "remnant death squad from the War of the Item Guilds who would eventually form the Item Law Makers Guild," but in order to avoid confusion, the producers fudged things to minimize confusion by using the well-known Item Laws from The Elemenstor Cycle.

Naturally, this attempt to avoid confusion only resulted in more confusion, especially due to ElamenSTAR's canonical nature. Tomono Shuuan, when confronted with this contradiction, responded:

"This is the plot that I came up with. There may be people that complain about its canonicity, but that's something which fans and authors will have to adapt to. The plot is written that way on purpose, it's according to specifications. This is something that I've created, and this is my story. There was a clear purpose to it, and it wasn't a mistake."

Shuuan then added, "I believe I have written the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architect's blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It's the same as that."
