The Age of Whimpering

  • -75,300 to -70,101

"Do not speak so lightly of such things, Myyneldarynn" sneered Quailheart, "Long before your kind cowered in these caves, my... my father fought against your ancestors in the War of the Encients. Though it was before my birth, I remember his wounds to this day... even when I was old enough to string a bow they had not healed."

"Wow..." marveled S'yrf'yl, "and I thought that I was old!"

-- EL:TDoUS Part 1

As the powerful Darkstorm ended/started/continued, the first of beings to emerge from its ebbing/increasing fury were the mysterious Encients. Little is known of the time of these creatures, save the mysterious myths and legendary legends of the Nevelost, in which it is known as The Time of the Encients. Considering how few of them survived into the latter days of recorded history (and how fewer of them still were given the time of day by the other discerning races) it is little wonder that this time is relatively unknown, and referred to as The Age of Whimpering by all except the Nevelost.

During this time it is said that the knowledge and power of the Darkstorm, known as the Epic Ways of the Encients is transmitted to a chosen few of the Nevelost, and (for some reason) the Minotaur. Though the Epic Ways were lost in the devastating War of the Encients it is possible that some of the Encient Teachings were preserved in the ways of P'wn, Swervl'sla, Shamanism, or possibly even Durudism.

Source materials in the ELotH canon consist only of references and stories, such as those told by Llorllthos in the Crystalcrown Chronicles, and source materials dealing with the Unlight War, which include legends told by the Mean Elves and a few snippets thrown out by Quailheart. To date there are no books dealing specifically with this part of the timeline, though surely Realmworlds will remedy this "profit vacuum" at some point.

Timeline of Whimpering

  • approx -75,000 - After marvelling at the newly formed Worldplace for a bit, the Encients begin building great structures. They get bored of this, and then begin inscribing them with powerful yet ambiguous runes. After getting bored of that, they just pile a bunch of junk in them. This goes on for... a few thousand years.

  • approx -74,250 - The Encients, looking around at the other emerging races of the world, think it's about time that they gave them some of their powerful wisdom. They choose the Nevelost, and instruct them in the Epic Ways they gleaned from the fading/arising Darkstorm.

  • approx -74,000 - The earliest factions of the Elves get wind of this and are mega-pissed, believing themselves the most Epic of all creatures. They demand that the Encients instruct them as well.

  • approx -73,500 - The Encients think about this for a while, and then decide to teach some of their Epic Knowledge to a few chosen Minotaur, just to upset the Elves, who were being quite rude.

  • approx -70,101 - The War of the Encients being long forgotten, peace is restored between the Nevelost and the Elves. The Eagles, however, still hate everyone. The Encients mysteriously disappear from the Mysterwoods, never to be seen again.
