Triskaidekaphilia

Ranking comfortably in the top 10 most powerful weapons of Battal is Triskaidekaphilia, the 13 Edges also known as 13 Blade or Lucky 13.

This coveted weapon was forged and used by the Epic hero Welregar of Ebonshire in the fires of Mount Volcanus out of 13 less Epic swords he nicked from a nearby Dwarven village. The Dwarves had apparently made the 13 seperate swords out of various remains of Great Dragons slain over the past two decades.

Triskaidekaphilia is literally 13 magical blades fused into one. What would've been 13 "so-so" enchanted weapons on their own are a powerful force in the hands of someone who can switch between them at will. The sword normally appears to be a average, but not great blade of no real significance.

However, at the pommel is a primative dial with 13 tiny gemstones and an arrow carved into the handle. By aligning a stone with the arrow and pressing down on the dial, the sword transmutates into one of 13 fantastic forms. After several years, Welregar mastered each of the 13 transmutations and became a nigh-unstoppable force in the world of professional heroism.

After Welregar's untimely death, the sword fell into obscurity. It has a knack for dissapearing for long lengths of time, and in the entire history of Battal, has only been wielded twice more. And only one of the wielders, Lyta A'lon, was actually any good with it.

In the ELotH: TES - Pen and Paper RPG Item guidebook, Triskaidekaphilia is listed as a "Gamebreaking Item", and though there are stats for it there, it is highly advised that any inclusion of any sword even resembling Triskaidekaphilia will greatly upset the balance of the game to insane levels. This does not stop RPG players from begging Game Masters for it constantly. This has led to several popular "Every Character Has a Duplicate of Triskaidekaphilia" game mods that are very entertaining, but bizarre and confusing.

The one downside of the blade was that a slight slip of the fingers would stick the sword in the wrong Transmutation for a time period varying from five minutes to an entire day. Although Welregar and the third wielder learned to adapt, the second wasn't as lucky and was struck down by War Men after accidentally locking Triskaidekaphilia in form V, sticking him with the rather useless powers of swimming and talking to fish.

The 13 Transmutations

  • Transmutation ZERO - Not counted officially amongst the various transformations of the sword. ZERO is the default state of Triskaidekaphilia, appearing to be nothing more than a decent but not great sword of average quality and no particular special powers.

  • Transmutation I - The so-called "Speed" form of Triskaidekaphilia. In this form, Triskaidekaphilia becomes a light rapier. The wielder of Triskaidekaphilia in this form has superhuman speed, able to move almost faster than the naked eye can see, and attack with precise and light strikes. This was, without a doubt, Welregar's favorite form of the blade. Ironically, it also caused his untimely death when he slipped on a banana peel while using it to travel across the continent at 500 miles per hour.

  • Transmutation II - The "Power" form of Triskaidekaphilia. In this form, Triskaidekaphilia becomes a gigantic claymore. Using Triskaidekaphilia in this state gives the bearer tremendous superhuman strength, stamina, and resistance to injury. However, the huge size also slows down movement and makes delicate maneuvers nigh-impossible.

  • Transmutation III - The "Flight" form of Triskaidekaphilia. In this form, Triskaidekaphilia takes the form of a scimitar. The wielder of the sword in this form is able to fly quickly and expertly under their own power. Experienced fighters using this mode have also been known to be able to create razor-sharp blades of air with a swipe of the sword.

  • Transmutation IV - The "Fire" form of Triskaidekaphilia. In this form, Triskaidekaphilia takes the form of a flaming falchion. Waving the blade in this form can project blasts of flame, as well as control and extinguish other sources of fire.

  • Transmutation V - The "Water" form of Triskaidekaphilia. In this form, Triskaidekaphilia transforms into a cutlass that reeks of fish. Holding this blade gives the user the ability to breathe, see, and swim expertly in any body of water. It also grants the less-appreciated power of communication with fish.

  • Transmutation VI - The "Ghost" form of Triskaidekaphilia. In this form, Triskaidekaphilia turns into a Mortuary Sword. The wielder gains the ability to become intangible or invisible at will, but not in direct sunlight. The blade also gains the ability to damage and injure Ghosts.

  • Transmutation VII - The "Antimagic" form of Triskaidekaphilia. In this form, Triskaidekaphilia becomes a glowing Jian. This blade does increased damage to creatures created out of Elemanifestation or sorcery. Particularly undead and Furniliars. In addition, this sword can dispell enchantments and reflect Spells and gears back at their casters. It was this form that bested Unlight's Eternal Decay.

  • Transmutation VIII - The "Diamond" form of Triskaidekaphilia. In this form, Triskaidekaphilia turns into a crystalized broadsword. The wielder becomes invulnerable to most injuries, and the sword itself is able to cut through almost any material and shoot small diamond darts when swung.

  • Transmutation IX - The "Life" form of Triskaidekaphilia. In this form, Triskaidekaphilia turns into a glowing green Gladius. The wielder becomes able to heal from any injury imaginable. In addition, those stabbed with the blade are also healed, and it can even resurrect the recently dead. In addition, the wielder gains highly advanced, animalistic senses of smell, hearing, taste, and sight.

  • Transmutation X - The "Duplication" form of Triskaidekaphilia. Taking the form of a katana, this form allowed the wielder to multiply themselves by creating magical duplicates. The highest recorded number of duplicates created by this transmutation was well over 800. However, it may be capable of even more.

  • Transmutation XI - The "Transchanting" form of Triskaidekaphilia. Striking inanimate objects when the sword is transformed into this longsword form awakens their Allsoul and brings them to life under the command of the user of Triskaidekaphilia.

  • Transmutation XII - The "Wisdom" form of Triskaidekaphilia. When the blade was transformed into this bastard sword, the user's intelligence was increased 100 fold. Ironically, it was the most rarely used form by Welregar and the second owner, but it was the prefered form of the third - and problably what contributed to her being the longest lived of all the owners of the weapon.

  • Transmutation XIII - The "Absorbaloft" form of Triskaidekaphilia, and potentially the most powerful. Touching this dirk to something magical, enchanted, or otherwise supernatural would allow form XIII to temporarily absorb their nature and use it. For instance, touching Transmutation XIII to an Electric Rat would grant the blade the power to project blasts of Lighting. Although its useful enchantment was mitigated by its short reach, which meant the user had to be ridiculously close to something dangerous to actually get any use out of the last form.

In my opinion this is one of the coolest weapons in the ELotH:TES universe. -bfg00-
