Back to Philosophies of Battal

Vigorous Aliveness

One of the common elements of the series concerns how often characters find enlightenment on the wrong end of a beat-stick. This is an actual philosophical concept in Battal, referred to as Vigorous Aliveness.

The basic theory states that the best way to prove you exist is to have your body, mind, and soul kicked the crap out of by whatever horrible monsters, concepts, and soul-eating demons you can find. More advanced theory posits that Vigorous Aliveness can also be taught to others, a theory that Char Reyarteb subscribes to (See: Bloodlustiness).

"Every time some dragon, Gore-Orc, or Red Turbo Swamp Slime Raccoon stomps my face in, I have to pause and say, 'Hey, it's not all bad. At least I know where my xyphoid process is, every time it gets bruised and almost driven into my heart." --Lander, on The Wizbits

Vigorous Aliveness features into one of Battal's more distinctive kinds of humor, the kind that grants lulz.

The game of Agash has intimate ties with the philosophies of Vigorous Aliveness, Bloodlustiness, and lulz.
