Demonleather
Magical leather made from the hides of demons and related monsters. Various legendary herbs and spices were used to tan the hide, which then had to be subjected to other dark and unspeakable rituals before it was finally ready for use.
The secrets of the creation of the fell fabric is lost to the sands of time, but it was reputed to grant to its wearer resistance to heat and fire, as well as the ability to see and speak with demons. It found its greatest popularity among a small faction of usually overweight, middle-aged merchants. The members of this faction would congregate in "gangs" and travel the countryside, searching for their lost and wasted youth, while endlessly chattering about what rule-breakers and free spirits they were.
Its use fell out of favor after a few of these "gangs" ran into actual outlaws and bandits. The merchants' demonleather did little to protect them from their gruesome fate, whose details are far too gory and perverse to mention here. All that can be said is that it tended to involve rope, pointed implements and, from time to time, livestock.
