Furniphilia
The Japanese offshoot of Furnies. While ostensibly similar to American Furnie fandom, furniphilia is marked by a variety of Japanese quirks best not explored here. Without getting into gritty details, the Gangster Octopus makes frequent appearances in furniphilia works.
Furthermore, furniphilia has been justified by its fans by pointing to a long tradition of sexual interaction with furniture in Japanese culture, particularly among some of the more obscure and isolated samurai clans, which does not exist in American culture. Hence, some Furnies maintain that the Japanese version of the fetish is the 'true path', and that the American version is an offensive mockery, only developed in the past ten years as a result of widespread access to the Internet and Japanese anime. Conversely, others (mainly the Japanese themselves) argue that there is in fact very little evidence for this supposed 'long tradition of furniphilia' in Japanese culture, and such 'evidence' that exists in fact results from mistranslation. The debate continues to rage on Furnie websites to this day.
