Disputed Pages

If you think an article is unfit for the wiki, don't just post it on Requests for Deletion or overwrite it.

Instead, give it a chance by creating a Disputed Article Discussion page. Start by adding a header to the page using this template:

This article's {'subject'} is Disputed. See its {'link to discussion page'} for details.

Replace {'subject'} with the aspect of the article you find unfit (its veracity, relevance, etc.). The name of the linking page should be the article's name + (disputed). For example: James Bort (disputed)

"(discussion)" is also acceptable.

Add its link to this page and let the community decide what to do. After a conclusion has been reached (no flame wars, please), move the link below the "Archived Disputed Pages" header on this page, in order to preserve past discussions for future reference.

All comments previously on this page have been moved to their appropriate discussion pages. I hope this page will smooth out the process of removing inappropriate pages. Thank you for your participation! ~Lucres

I think that where possible we should create in character discussion pages and create as plausible in character resolutions for disputes as possible. My changes to the James Bort page are a good example of what I mean. - Xaph

Agreed. The Out of Character stuff should be reserved for offensive and problematic pages, like The Roig Syndrome. Otherwise, if you just find something lame, it can easily be couched in other terms. Dan

In my opinion, all disputes here can be handled In Character. I have yet to see a dispute that demanded OOC intervention. Every "OOC" page detracts from the atmosphere and fuels the conspiracy theories. Just be creative. -Belda

Roig couldn't have been handled in character. Or at least I'm not smart enough to know how. I have no idea how we could have talked around that one. -patkelly

Now that we have this nifty discussion button, I think it's time to re-think the procedure for disputing pages. The system I came up with originally was an act of desperation anyway, so I'm going to rewrite it to take advantage of this new feature. Also: I think we should start moving the discussions cluttering up various pages to their own "discuss" sections.

the fact that you can't edit or remove this stuff makes me a little cautious about putting too much discussion here... there's no concept of moving dealt with issues into an archive.

That's what I worry about too. The "gears" of the wiki end up too visible, which kinda compromises suspension of disbelief. Also, I like the disputed pages, because it centralizes the discussion, and puts the issues on the radar.

Hmmm... didn't think this would be such a thorny issue...
When I first set up Disputed pages, I was trying to emulate a feature like the "discuss" bar, so I jumped at using it like this when it was added to the wiki. I think it would simplify the process, but you guys bring up valid points. Should we just stick with the old system?

we should probably stick with the old system until this one matures a bit...

I really like being able to use both, actually, but if the feature set on this discussion gets fleshed out I might change my mind.

Here's an idea: we could use the Discuss pages for in-character debates (where they could safely remain without ruining the illusion), and create new pages for OOC discussions. What do you think?

I think that's the best way to handle it, since you can't see these Discussion pages without logging in. And it would make sense that a lot of discussion/arguing go on in-character -- adds to the verisimilitude, eh? (I just wish we could format text here.)
