Ha! Ha!
I'm discussing the FrontPage!

Anonymous said

at 7:00 am on Dec 10, 2005

Hmm. So now the question. What is this discussion best used for? And now I understand--leaving OOC comments. What opinions have we on this proposal? Is anyone even aware these exist?

Anonymous said

at 7:03 pm on Dec 10, 2005

I was aware. I was hoping we could use the Discussion page in place of all those little comments that adorn the bottoms of unfinished pages and what not, but I suppose OOC discussion isn't a bad idea either. Especially as we can't edit our Discussion messages should "canon" change later.

Anonymous said

at 8:40 pm on Dec 10, 2005

You can't edit your messages because we can't be sure who you are - there's no individual logins on pbwiki, only class logins (Reader/Contributor/Mod/Admin). I'm planning to put in the ability to delete or at least hide comments, and let Mods and Admins toggle between those states. The whole discussion thing is a bit of an experiment now but will remain as at least the level of functionality here. Probably more elaborate as time goes on but it's a start, right? -nathan/pbwiki

Anonymous said

This is very nice. I agree with keeping it all OOC; in fact, since this is set apart, it's the only good place for OOC.

You know what I'd like to see? A science fiction version of ELotH:TES. Just putting that out there in case people are interested. I'm much more into sci-fi than fantasy.

Anonymous said

Well, you could create your own pbwiki. It *is* free.

SamSim -- That would be fun... Hrmmmm.

Anonymous said

I lack the technical ability, sadly.

Anonymous said

at 1:51 am on Dec 12, 2005

You don't need technical ability. Just go to http://www.pbwiki.com, type in a name for your wiki and email address, and they'll send you a password. It'll be set up more or less like this one from the get-go. You just need to fill in the content. The pbwiki guys will do the technical stuff.

Anonymous said

at 2:12 am on Dec 12, 2005

One piece of advice, SamSim; don't jump right into it. I think a lot of the success of this wiki is that the main points were fleshed out by Tycho and the crew, and contributors have even more to draw on with all the Penny Arcade stuff. If you just set it up with the vague instructions of 'Sci-Fi' wiki, it will probably end up pretty convulted. Take a few days and figure out what the main points of the Sci-Fi series are going to be before you do it, and it'll probably turn out better for it.

Speaking of making other wikis, I just wanted to point out "Lexicon", in case you haven't heard of it. A few years ago, someone thought up an interesting idea for a game to play on a wiki. I think you'll find the concept familiar, though more structured than what we're doing here. http://www.20by20room.com/2003/11/lexicon_an_rpg.html I imagine if a group of us wanted to get together to start such a game on a new topic, there might be many interested participants (assuming the topic was agreeable).

Anonymous said

at 5:50 pm on Dec 12, 2005

That's pretty neat accually, but wouldn't that require massive amounts of crimethinking? Crimethinker. Anyway, if other people want ot try it out, I suggest we get a seperate wiki, so that other people can't interfere and if it's a sucess, we post it here. I suggest maybe expanding on one of the existing articles yet either large or obviously destined to become large, like the P&PRPG or the book of laws.

Anonymous said

Tanktunker - I definitely wasn't thinking of doing it on this wiki. Besides, it's a game about writing fiction whereas what we're documenting is real. I just thought it had a similar flavor and that contributors here might like it. Here's a list of some example Lexicons people have done: http://gamegrene.com/wiki/Lexicon_games

Anonymous said

I like it there. Good to have an "official" page for disputes and suchlike. Plus, it lets us use the "discussion" pages for humerous in-character discussion (for example, I think the Drinking and Pill Binge page looked better with a twisted discussion related to the veracity of the binge).

Anonymous said

at 7:13 pm on Dec 14, 2005

Guess I'll stick with the Javascript then.

Anonymous said

at 10:02 pm on Dec 14, 2005

It would be really just exceedingly helpful to know what you like more about one than the other - you prefer the word-based versus line-based diffs?

Anonymous said

at 12:45 am on Dec 15, 2005

yeah... most of the edits here are only of a few characters on a page, so since the whole thing gets struck through it's a little hard to diff..
It's especially hard with this wiki since people tend not to insert a lot of carriage returns, so a "line" ends up being a paragraph.
diffing for instance the front page when the color of the box changes, it's pretty hard to tell what is different at a glance.

Anonymous said

at 1:16 am on Dec 15, 2005

Ok, we'll work on improving our server diff support. :)

Anonymous said

at 7:05 pm on Dec 15, 2005

Everything's bigger! On this page, I mean. The text.

Anonymous said

at 2:04 am on Dec 16, 2005

What I really want is the ability to highlight a sentence, click a button, and be told who added it. But I can see how that would be really complicated on the back end.

Anonymous said

at 2:38 am on Dec 16, 2005

Yeah, freaking tough. Imagine if like 4 people changed parts of the sentence. Jeez that would get weird.

Really cool though. Maybe in 4 years.

How do you ban someone? Some guy just stupidified the front page and I had to revert it. Tanktunkert or something his nick was.

Anonymous said

at 9:36 pm on Dec 16, 2005

is it possible to have a set of links on the front page for 'most viewed' pages?

Anonymous said

at 10:18 pm on Dec 16, 2005

I mentioned on the [To-Do] page a couple days ago that I think the frontpage needs a major revision to reduce clutter and make navigation easier. This would involve cutting down the number of header bars (currently there are EIGHT!), reducing the number of specific links from the frontpage and instead including "topic links" (i.e. the Items link would stay, but the individual "famous hats" etc. links would only be visible from the Items page; and like that for all the other categories, too), and possibly trying a Wikipedia-style Featured Page or Recently Added pages. Anybody have any comments/suggestions about that? I don't want to unilaterally redesign the whole thing...

Anonymous said

at 10:29 pm on Dec 16, 2005

I think that is a lovely idea, Toshi. ^_^ I say do it!

Anonymous said

at 10:30 pm on Dec 16, 2005

That would be very nice. I am, however, unable to do that. That takes like, skill and stuff. I just know how to write words; anything beyond a simple table escapes me. Get someone else to do it :D

Anonymous said

at 11:38 pm on Dec 16, 2005

Just formatting and organizing? Ok. But I would ask that we make this all on a separate page, give the community a chance to voice protest -- and if it passes inspection, we put it up.

Anonymous said

at 12:31 am on Dec 17, 2005

I agree with the idea of uncluttering the main page.

Anonymous said

at 8:08 am on Dec 17, 2005

Oi, what's up with Tanktunker? He's spamming the main page.

Anonymous said

I'm flattered, I have an impersonator, a stupid, vandal one, but still an impersonator. No, I didn't change the front page to the hoax thing.

Anonymous said

at 4:20 am on Dec 18, 2005

The price of being a well-known contributor, I guess. I know you wouldn't do stuff like that, Tank. These vandals will stoop to anything, won't they?

Anonymous said

at 1:27 am on Dec 19, 2005

I just have a question- how do you add the sidebar?

Anonymous said

at 1:34 am on Dec 19, 2005

to a wiki? just make a page named SideBar.

Anonymous said

at 1:36 am on Dec 19, 2005

I kept making things like sidebar and Sidebar, no wonder!

Anonymous said

at 8:05 am on Dec 21, 2005

All right all, take a look at [TestFrontPage]. The header links have not been made, obviously, and those that do work don't go to pages that have been updated to reflect their new function- so please IGNORE LINKS. Basically, every link currently on the frontpage that is not on the TestFrontPage would be relocated to a "sub-hub" page (or more than one, no reason to avoid redundancy) where common sense dictates you would look for it. Each of these sub-hubs could have a paragraph of introductory text about the topic, then a list of relevant topic links like are in the current frontpage, though perhaps more detailed. I re-organized the categories to be less redundant, too. Thoughts?

Anonymous said

at 8:43 am on Dec 21, 2005

I like the idea, but it really doesnt cut down on the bulk much-it has about the same number of links (very loose approximation), and spreads things out even further.

Anonymous said

at 8:47 pm on Dec 21, 2005

Yeah, it's still really freaking linky. Do we even need all the sub-headings under the main ones? We'd be much cleaner and iPod-ish without them. By iPod, I mean sleek and sophisticated, not white and shiny.

Anonymous said

at 9:12 pm on Dec 21, 2005

I disagree -- I find the test front page is a bit smaller, and what links it has seem to be better organized. It uses more horizontal and less vertical space, and I find that broader shape more appealing to the eye. Plus, there aren't like nine tiny one-line/box announcements floating around it. I don't see a problem with the front page having a fair number of links, if it's easy to skim -- newcomers could see, at a glance, what sorts of topics exist and what they can jump to with a click.

Anonymous said

at 10:36 pm on Dec 21, 2005

Does it work with the SideBar?

Anonymous said

at 11:26 pm on Dec 21, 2005

TychoC:It certainly does work with the SideBar! In fact you can't apparently make a page without the SideBar once there is a SideBar, so the SideBar is on the TestFrontPage now... I considered leaving out the lists under each sub-hub link, but I wanted to give examples of what sort of things are on each sub-hub.
Anywho- It does still have a lot of links, but I cut them about in half, which says a lot about the current state of the FrontPage. RSmith has discovered my secret plan entirely ^_^.

Anonymous said

at 8:29 pm on Jan 2, 2006

seems like the new "recent changes" aren't actually showing all the changes... like my chance to the source code for the broken link generator... also.. what's up with the strikethrough on the mo-pi change?

Anonymous said

at 8:46 pm on Jan 2, 2006

I don't think their algorithm for picking out the changes to the page likes it when you make sweeping changes to a large paragraph of text so it gets confuses and strikes the whole block out, even if you've just made several cuts and stitches like I did on on the mo-pi page. The new "recent changes" has a bug with the DHTML code too... if you expand the last at the bottom of the page and scroll down past the changes for that entry, you'll see all the other changes that happened before it -- somehow certain snippets of changes to page cause the rest of the changes to get rolled up under the "+" sign for that entry. Your change to the source code page is on there, just hidden... which is a bit weird certainly.

Anonymous said

at 10:10 am on Jan 3, 2006

Erm... Could you people stop changing spelling mistakes in the comments in the articles? It would be more 'realistic' this way.

Anonymous said

at 12:22 pm on Jan 3, 2006

Hm, sorry for the bugs with Changes. I'm going to be working on it some more this week! And don't forget, RecentChanges is still around. :)

Anonymous said

at 2:26 am on Jan 4, 2006

It'd be cool if there were something like the RecentChanges page that only showed the last 2 days or so.. it would load quickly, but not be destroyed by the kind of thing I just did (edit the frontpage 20 times and blow away most of the entries on the changes.php page)

Anonymous said

at 9:30 am on Jan 4, 2006

Yeah, I was trying to articulate something like that on the Comments page here... that would be really useful. I like the idea of the "+" part but the format of the entries of RecentChanges is better. A combination of both would be the coolest I think.

Anonymous said

at 9:32 am on Jan 4, 2006

Oh yeah and the new front page is **tight**. Also sorry I haven't contributed in the last couple of days... it's like this when I'm at work, but I'll certainly do stuff at the weekend if I don't add anything during the week. ;)

I think we should whip up some javascript for the front page that picks a random quote and an object that we are particularly fond of.

Anonymous said

at 12:28 am on Jan 6, 2006

That would be awesome... possibly even "teh" awesome. If I was a younger man, I'd probably know a word ending in "-z0r" that could convey this feeling properly.

Anonymous said

My experience with Javascript consists of acting like I know what it is, but could we make it so we could like, tag particlar lines that would then be randomly shown on the front page?

Anonymous said

at 6:10 am on Jan 6, 2006

I'd like a random quote and object, but at the same time, I don't think any would capture ELotH:TES as well as Tell me more... does.

Anonymous said

at 7:35 pm on Jan 7, 2006

I agree with TychoC here. I mean, ther are lots of great ELotH:TES quotes out there, but how can you top "the furniture and the glory"? I always thought that line just summed up the entire wiki...

Anonymous said

Anonymous said

at 9:10 pm on Jan 7, 2006

Actually patkelly said that. I think there are lots of quotes that can sum it up. Like the one we have now: "Wait a second... Reyarteb... Reyarteb... Has anybody noticed that's Betrayer spelled backwards??"

Anonymous said

at 5:30 am on Jan 8, 2006

I'm quite fond of the revelatory "Reyarteb" quote myself, but a random quote-generator would be a nice touch! Could one of you talented wikimenstors mayhap have it select the choicer samples of the quotes page? Anything from Char's lips is epic literary gold, although Harbinger Portent and Lord Kinlo shined on occasion...

Anonymous said

Umm... Not sure where else to mention this-- But one of the fan-art pictures has been repalced, recently, with a picture of a chick in lingerie-- It looks like this is the third re-reversion of the file, so I though it would bear mention.

Anonymous said

Who the heck is Ivana Stefarina, and why has the world of actual hot chicks cataclysmically met with the world of fictional hot chicks? I don't think the picture is supposed to be there, it looks perhaps just a tad bit off-kilter for a site about ELotH:TES. (I beleive it might be the same pic Ariamakai is talking about)

Anonymous said

<crimethink>The books are fake. They do not exist. Tycho and Gabe (PA Tycho and Gabe, not Writer-Tycho and Stalker-Gabe) have admitted to it being a hoax. I'd like the books not to be fake. Besides, I need the writing practice. </crimethink>

Hoi!

Sorry I been gone so long, but I'm back.

Anonymous said

at 7:51 pm on May 20, 2006

If we're descending into crimethink, I have to say I think the whole thing is a lot more fun if the books don't actually exist. The idea of a fully-developed fandom with books that are only glimpsed through random quotes and references is more entertaining than if there were actual books written.

Anonymous said

at 9:55 pm on May 20, 2006

In fact, I'll go farther -- if the books (or cartoon series or games or whatever) actually existed, people wouldn't be able to invent quotes and references, which would take away the whole point.

Anonymous said

at 10:57 pm on May 20, 2006

Concurance met. 'Tis better to let it be a mystery, that we may never have an end to the craziness.

Plus, this being a wiki, even the oldest facts aren't immune to updates 'n new ideas. The less permanent soil we have, the more we can mess with.

It's more legible - but switching the system would be a quilp in the ass.

Tim said

at 7:11 pm on Jun 9, 2006

I think that a switch could be easily arranged.. but only if it were desirable.

K said

at 8:00 pm on Jun 9, 2006

Well, there's a lot of formatting and such on this site... I think we'd need a pretty compelling reason to switch. pbwiki seems to be doing just fine.

Anonymous said

at 8:46 pm on Jun 9, 2006

Why was the list of spells taken off the front page? I know they aren't as cool as gears, but they do play an important role in Battal - even the Elemenstors use them a lot. Now they're just sort of buried at the bottom of the list of gears...

Tim said

at 8:56 pm on Jun 9, 2006

spells are mainly used in the rpg and never by elemenstors (unless you can find some exceptions) I don't think they really are a big part of the fiction. that's why I swapped where the gears were listed and where the spells were listed.

Tim said

at 8:58 pm on Jun 9, 2006

if we were serious about wanting to switch then obviously I'd spend a little more time on formatting it correctly.. the main motivater for me would be this: http://elothtes.elwiki.com/index.php/Special:Specialpages

Tim said

at 8:59 pm on Jun 9, 2006

on top of that, pbwiki can't show revisions for pages that have been edited a bunch of times and the broken link coloring is broken on IE and the css for this pbwiki is 500k so you can't really browse the site on a mobile device. I'm sure eventually pbwiki will fix these things...

Tim said

at 8:59 pm on Jun 9, 2006

Tim said

at 9:01 pm on Jun 9, 2006

as for the spells/gears.. same reason why there isn't a "familiar list" on the front page.. part of what makes eloth:tes unique are the unique things that it brings to the table.

After the exams end, I'm going to make a roguelike webcomic. With '@' as a main character. And probably set in Battal. Fun or not?

Anonymous said

I would also find that hilarious. Although, the only reason I could think that he would have for sabotaging it would be if he had a bad day or something, and suddenly decided to destroy something which he started...

I wonder if asking him would be prudent/fruitful?

K said

I'm not totally sure what you mean, but it is common practice to note "I will be back to finish this later..." on a page. Of course, some pages sit like that for a LONG time (see MooMaa, for instance) so it's not 100% guarantee, but it can't hurt to note that you'll be back to do a particular page later.

Anonymous said

There's been some trouble recently with pages like ELotH:TES Movies and some TCG expansions thinking they're URLs instead of intrawiki links. Can anything be done about that or do we have to move the pages to get rid of the :s?

Anonymous said

at 8:15 pm on Jan 29, 2007

I'm thinking we may have to go through and ditch the :'s in links which is sad because they are important punctuation for ELotH:TES. Obviously its a conspriacy against the free usage of punctuation.

K said

Well I saw that Zeta had started to work on the Back to and Missing Back to lists and I decided to join in. Hopefully we can get the orphaned pages, mispellings, back to, and missing back tos all cleaned up.

Anonymous said

at 8:15 pm on Feb 6, 2007

As some of you have noticed, pages that have :'s in the link don't work properly anymore. This is because the browser is treating them as a protocol and not as a link. We will need to go through and revise all the pages with :'s in the name (just the link to the page) probably by changing them to -'s or just excising them completely. Please refrain from using :'s in your links. If a person has time they could design a script to go through and look for :'s and change them to -'s for the links, that would be a huge help.

K said

at 10:46 pm on Feb 6, 2007

Okay, it looks like what is broken is anything with a : in the *first word* of the link. On the front page, note that "ELotH:TES Movies" is broken, but "Other ELotH:TES Animation" is not. Similarly the ElamenSTAR "Final Battle:" episodes are all working fine. I've dropped a note on the "bugs" forum.

K said

at 4:34 am on Feb 7, 2007

Okay, there's no need to revise the pages with : in the name. PBWiki staff is on it: "Thank you for reporting the issue. We will try to get this resolved this week or next. We've assigned an internal ID number of 227 to this bug." So all shall be well, soon enough. d^_^b

Tim, or somebody who can run the code for the Mindless Automaton, if you aren't busy can you start up the MA? Thanks.

K said

at 7:20 pm on Mar 15, 2007

At the moment, backup.php doesn't work. So there's no way to download the .zip file that MA (or the standalone code) uses. For all I know, MA is working fine and just can't get the .zip. I've filed a bug report, but so far there hasn't been a reply.

I see. I wasn't aware of that.

I've noticed that some of the older pages have fallen out of memory, with some particularly obvious, nonfunny typos. Though it likely to be a terrible idea, perhaps a Spelling Fairie day should be instituted?

Anonymous said

I've been spell and grammar checking when I run into stuff. Do you have any pages/series of pages in particular that need it? I do agree alot of the older pages have been neglected. We probably ought to do a STUB day and start fixing stubs, then for the next BLD we can go through and look at old articles and see what Broken Links haven't been filled in yet.

Anonymous said

No particular pages come to mind, but stuff inetably pops up.were not professionals after all.it just seems like general spelling and grammar checking has died down catastrofically.

K said

Backup zip downloading has been fixed. However I haven't been able to get the BLT to work, and blt.zip is corrupted or something... Tim, you still around? Any thoughts?

blt_fixed2.zip seems to work now.. I posted most wanted.. the data is not quite as clean as what is spit out by the MA because the files with special characters in them show up as broken links.. other than that, it seems to work.

Okay, they moved awfully fast so it looks like they're not bots, they're people who are obsessed with spamming the wiki. The locks are temporary until we can figure out a good way to address this while keeping the wiki open for edits. Suggestions?

good solution for now

I tracerted him. It looks like the IP may be in Poland.

K said

at 8:33 pm on Apr 9, 2007

Hey Tim, do you know anything about IP blocking? It looks in the settings like that has to be purchased, but since this entire wiki exists at the pleasure of "Tycho's" bank account, I'm not sure how to address that. This has gone well beyond easily-patched vandalism. A long, LONG time ago there was some discussion of moving the wiki... I don't know. But this is becoming a real problem.

Anonymous said

at 6:37 pm on Apr 10, 2007

Hmm...it seems to have stopped. *crosses fingers*

Anonymous said

at 4:00 am on Apr 13, 2007

Hmmm.. I don't know anything about IP blocking.. there is still the elothtes.elwiki.com if we wanted to move I could spend a little more time making sure that everything transferred across seemlessly.. but it appears that the vandalism has subsided..

So does any one know what happened to the pictures? They don't seem to be working.

Nevermind. It was just the machine I was on.

K said

What do we think about adding the C&C3 comic to the comic resources? It doesn't reference ELotH directly, but those file boxes... Book 14 is probably in there somewhere. Thoughts?

Anonymous said

at 6:41 pm on Apr 30, 2007

Well it does show that Tycho Brahe is working on other books/sources of revenue but also it shows the wealth of writing that he has done for ELotH. Perhaps Book 14 is in there or perhaps it is some other work yet to be published by him.

Am I just imagining a crossover episode involving this show and Wizbits or what? They seem like sort of similar shows and I'm wondering if there was any overlap in the production staff, but I can't find many fansites about it:

No, I think you may be right. I can't remember the episode name though.

I think that the wizbits needs an entry on that wiki.. definately a great example of "Adaptation Decay"

Excellent. Perhaps the other Elemenstor Animations also deserve a page on there.

Is it just me, or is the search function totally not working in any way?

Anonymous said

ok.. I put a google search on the sidebar.. it won't be up to date with the latest, but it seem like it'd be much nicer than having no search at all

Hey guys!
Remember me? I used to write all kinds of stuff here some two years ago.

Anyway, I wonder, whether I could use the Elothtes franchise in potraying a character in a story, a geek who is obsessed with the Saga.

For real, would that be legal?

Anonymous said

at 9:00 pm on Feb 27, 2008

hey Jake! I don't think that anybody owns the rights to anything here (at least no claim of ownership has been made).. so I think its all fair game...

For those of you playing along at home: a careful reading of Book 9 will reveal that I invoked the bell of decisiveness there.

Well obviously. Although I would have eaten The Decisive Omelette, personally. Thanks for the promotion!

bfg00 said

It seems that all the pages that contain an apostrophe in their title are now considered broken even though most of them aren't (look for the RPG Player's Handbook for instance). Is this some scheme by some devious mind to suppress Brahe's seminal use of punctuation or just an error in pbwiki?

Tim said

at 9:29 pm on Oct 9, 2008

haha.. I think it was just a temporary hiccup, because running mindless again seems to have resolved the issue

bfg00 said

at 6:41 pm on Oct 17, 2008

We going to convert his page to pbwiki2.0?

Tim said

at 8:03 pm on Oct 20, 2008

I don't think that pbwiki 2.0 is quite ready to handle a wiki of this size...

if you want to try out a 2.0 version of this wiki that I created.. feel free to motor over to here..

bfg00 said

at 8:23 pm on Oct 21, 2008

Yeah, I can see what you mean. Is there anyway to customize the layout?

Tim said

at 9:29 pm on Oct 21, 2008

there are apparently some javascript gizmos that you can use to change around the layout, but they aren't officially supported...

also... if you want to edit the wiki, you need to sign up for a pbwiki account which means that casual users may shy away.

bfg00 said

at 6:39 pm on Oct 22, 2008

That's annoying. Is there anyway to turn that off?

Tim said

at 7:16 pm on Oct 22, 2008

nope... I think that's the real deal breaker for us right now..

bfg00 said

at 7:33 pm on Nov 17, 2008

Looks like they disabled the lock feature. That or I just can't find it.

Tim said

at 10:24 pm on Nov 19, 2008

actually... it looks like we're not a premium wiki anymore.. guess tycho has decided to stop paying for us.
